Shujaat's killing: Police under scanner for 'security lapse'
6/16/2018 11:18:59 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 16: Even as the Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of journalist Syed Shujaat Bukhari, the JKP has come under scanner for alleged security lapse in the terror attack at Kashmir's media hub.
Sources said New Delhi has received a negative feedback of the performance of the state police.
Sources said the police had kept a patrol vehicle for surveillance at press enclave near historic Lal Chowk but that at the time of attack on Shujaat, the armored vehicle was not present there.
"Also, there's a team of cops in civvies who have the sole duty to report about the activities at the press enclave. But at time of the attack they are believed to have not been present there," said a source privy to the details of alleged lapse.
What has come as a shocker are allegations that the police took time to reach the spot after the attack. While the police have been telling media that the concerned SHO of Police Station Kothi Bagh reached the spot within five minutes, the witnesses said the cops arrived after more than fifteen minutes.
Sources said it took police "some time" to reach the spot in the wake of apprehension that it was Fidayeen attack. "Soon after the attack, people started running from the spot and there were instant rumors that Fidayeen have stormed the area," said an official on the condition of anonymity.
But the security analysts believe that the "quick response team" should have reached the spot within two minutes because the police station is barely 300 meters away from the spot.
It's also being probed if more than four terrorists were involved in the attack. "How did all these gunmen manage to reach the spot. When terrorists can have a cakewalk into heart of the city and escape hassle-free, the state of policing can only be imagined," said a security analyst.
The alleged lapse on the part of state police has come to forth when the government has ordered a high level probe into the killing.
On June 14, Shujaat and his two PSOs were killed within moments of the trio having boarded his vehicle to leave the media enclave. "The terrorists had plotted the killing in such a way they didn't attack him till he got into the vehicle," said a police official on the condition of anonymity.
But the police has been denying any lapse on their part. "Our team reached there within five minutes and same can be verified," said a police official.
The police have been denying all such allegations adding that the case would be cracked soon.
