Will Pak Army allow Imran to function freely?
8/3/2018 10:06:45 PM
For Imran Khan, new Prime Minister of Pakistan, rigging in elections is not a new trend. It has happened in the past and when the Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaaf protested against rigging that took place in 2013 elections nobody believed the PTI and later it was confirmed by various tribunal. PTI feels that Pakistan was swept by pro-Imran Khan wave and that helped the PTI to do well in Punjab which otherwise was a stronghold of PML(N). This way if Imran Khan's PTI has won the election it is not by fluke but by Imran's grit and clean image. That is the reason that the swearing in ceremony may be austere and there will be no ostentation and extravangaza. He may not invite any world leaders including Prime Minister, Narandra Modi but some of his friends in cricket and Bollywood may be invited and notably one among the limited list is famed cricketer and Punjab Minister, Navjot Singh Sidhu. Austerity thy name is Imran and that could be one of the reasons for securing the support of voters.
Well Imran's first statement, after having emerged as the largest single party in the National Assembly that if India takes one step Islamabad was ready for taking two steps is somewhat confusing. India has plainly told him that talks could begin once Pakistan stopped export of terror to Jammu and Kashmir. Indications are that since Imran could be under the grip of the Army he may not be allowed to take a free decision. Since the Army's role has helped Imran to win the elections he has to follow the Army's plans and once he rejects those plans he may be replaced by Army rule. The Army is opposed to export of terror to Jammu and Kashmir because the Pakistan Army Generals believe that with the possible support of people in Kashmir the ongoing Jehad has been won.
Hence as far as the possibilities of bilateral talks are concerned chances for such dialogue seem to be remote. And during the previous rule in Pakistan India has been harping on the need for resumption of bilateral talks for settling various issues but since Pakistan did not concede India rejected talks for which an offer was made by Islamabad. Imran's Government may be run by the Army provided PTI Chief did not show his muscles and is ready to take decisions on his own. If Imran is not capable to imposing his will it may be as good as Army rule thereby relegating Imran to be a rubber stamp. It would be a blunder if Imran is not allowed to function freely and Imran being in the cage could be a loss to India because during critical phase of facing the voters he did not says he would see to it that Kashmir is incorporated with Pakistan as his rival Shehbaz Sharif would say.
