Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Aug 19: Director School Education Kashmir, G N Itoo today said that no teacher would be allowed to work in the zonal offices, however, at the same time he has forgotten that some of his teachers are doing jobs not meant for them.
A government teacher who was till recently discharging his duties as Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) continues to call the shots at the Directorate of School Education located at Srinagar, summer capital of the state. The teacher keeps the Director School Education in keep humour and as such the head of the department is taking no action whatsoever.
Sources told Early Times that the teacher features regularly as a newscaster at Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) Srinagar and at times he seems to be de-facto Director of School Education for Kashmir division. He also plays a host on some days in a week for a current affairs programme being telecast from DDK Srinagar.
"The worse part of the story is that the teacher reads out the news bulletins that are telecast during the day time from DDK Srinagar. These bulletins are telecast during the duty hours and the teacher in question conveniently gives his duties a miss and instead reads news at the DDK Srinagar," said sources.
Sources said that there are many teachers in the department who have never been accounted for their duties by the department. No action whatsoever has been taken against these teachers and they too continue to make merry while sitting in the cozy environs of their respective homes.
"Many of the teachers who are associated with the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) and the Teachers Forum seldom attend to their duties. When they are asked why they are not discharging their duties these teachers say that since they are office bearers of EJAC and Teachers Forum they are not supposed to teach in the schools," said sources.
Sources said that these employee leaders have been taking the whole system for a ride with the students being the ultimate sufferers. They said that in the past these people have been able to keep the bureaucrats in good humour following which no punitive action was taken against them.
"There is a full-fledged media cell at Directorate of School Education Kashmir. The unfortunate part is that teachers and ReTs are running the show at this media cell. Ideally the mass communication professionals should have been involved in this cell. This would have ensured that the performance of the cell is up to the mark with the department receiving accolades from the people as a whole," said sources.
An official spokesman here said that Director School Education Kashmir after chairing a meeting with Joint Directors and Chief Education Officers (CEOs) of Kashmir Division said that no teacher will be allowed to work in Zonal Education Offices. The Director directed all the CEOs to implement the directions regarding the attachment of employees in letter and spirit and only avail the services of teaching staff in the offices as per guidelines already issued.
