Teachers allege nepotism in nomination for awards
8/23/2018 10:29:25 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 23: Teachers working in various schools of Basohli town have alleged that the committee constituted for recommending names for awards during Independence Day function had recommended the names of their own subordinates.
Refuting the allegations, Committee members said that only few teachers had forwarded their applications for award and based on their academic contribution for the year 2017-18 and as per criteria, awards were given.
The teachers alleged that a committee of five members was constituted by tehsil administration Basohli comprised of GDC Principal Basohli, Principal Navodya Vidyalaya School Basohli, DIET Principal Basohli, Principal Higher Secondary School Basohli and ZEO Basohli.
"The committee members had recommended the names of their subordinates and teachers working in their own institutions", the teachers alleged, adding that a teaching faculty member, who had never served outside Basohli town had been given award.
"This teaching faculty member had joined in Basohli town in year 2005 and since then, he had never completed a tenure outside the tehsil. He was transferred to a school in Mahanpur but within few months, he had got his order modified and returned back", a teacher alleged.
Moreover, all the committee members had only recommended the names of teaching faculty members ignoring the contribution of doctors, engineers, officers of Agriculture dept or others for their services.
Refuting the allegations, GDC Basohli Principal RS Jamwal said that there were few permanent faculty members in the Basohli College as well as in Mahanpur College. "The criteria was finalized by the Committee and it comprised of multi components including their academic performance in current year, attending conference, paper publication etc", he said, adding that they had received 8-9 applications out of which those who were qualified were given the awards", he said.
On the question of award given to a teacher by the committee, Jamwal said that the criteria for elementary level, high school level was separately defined. "In the criteria, there was no question of serving in far flung areas but their contribution to institution, results etc. were considered. Among the applications received, those who were in the merit were given awards", he said.
Another committee member informed that though the applications were invited from all schools but none had applied for the awards from middle school level.
