US-Pakistan ties nose dive and Pak warms up to Russia
9/3/2018 8:45:03 PM
Despite repeated warnings to Pakistan the US
has felt frustrated against Islamabad for not taking any action against the terrorists. The result of such warnings are manifest in the shape of a major cut imposed by the US on Pakistan as far as military aid is concerned. The US will cancel USD 300 million in military aid to Pakistan over its failure to take "decisive actions" to support President Donald Trump's new South Asia policy and act against terror groups like the Haqqani network and Lashkar-e-Toiba, the Pentagon has announced, a fresh blow to the deteriorating ties between the two nations. The announcement comes just days before US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is due to visit Pakistan to meet the country's new Prime Minister Imran Khan. The US and others have long complained that Pakistan provides safe haven to militant networks, allowing them to carry out cross-border attacks in Afghanistan and India
The Pak-US ties seem to be under a cloud and there are chances for improving these ties in case Islamabad takes action against the terrorists. The Pentagon's move, which needs to be approved by the US Congress, is part of a broader suspension of aid announced in January. US President Donald Trump since assuming office has been tough on Pakistan over its inaction against terror groups, saying Washington has got "nothing but lies & deceit" in return for millions of dollars in aid over the years. And Pakistan has suffered heavily because of lack of trust by the US establishment. This way Pakistan has to bank on its all weather friend like China. But as far as current economy of China is concerned Beijing may not be able to compensate of the loss of the US military aid to Pakistan.
That could have been the reason for Pakistan to establish cordial ties with Russia under various schemes trade between Russia and Pakistan may be doubled, joint naval exercises and Russia may help Pakistan to establish underwater gas pipe. And India is unhappy over the way Pakistan and Russia are set to carry joint naval exercises. As Pakistan navigates its troubled relationship with the US and hence Islamabad is warming up to Russia. But Pakistan should know that Russia is no longer as powerful as the Soviet Union. And since Pakistan had no chance it has to either bank on China or Russia to avoid any further embarrassment from the US.
