Nagrota attack: NIA arrests key accused in 2016 Army base offensive
10/20/2018 10:19:49 PM
Agencies

New Delhi, Oct 20: India's National Investigation Agency on Saturday arrested the prime accused in the 2016 Nagrota Army camp attack case while he was attempting to flee the country. Mohammad Ashraf was arrested from New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport when he was on his way to Saudi Arabia via Sri Lanka, sources reported.
The NIA in June had announced the arrest of a third accused in connection with the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir in November 2016 in which seven soldiers were killed. Ashiq Baba of Alochibagh locality in Srinagar was arrested by the NIA in a joint operation with the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Earlier, the NIA had arrested Tariq Ahmad Dar, a Pulwama-based timber dealer and a resident of Chillipura in Shopian district, and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) operative Syed Muneer-Ul-Hasan-Qadri in the case.
During their interrogation, it was revealed that the Nagrota attack was carried out by the JeM, a banned terror group based in Pakistan, an official said. Three Pakistani militants were killed in the operation following the 29 November 2016 attack, and a huge cache of firearms, ammunition, explosives and other articles were recovered on them.
JeM chief Masood Azhar had in 2016 confessed to managing the Nagrota terror attack. "This week's publication was delayed as the attack in Nagrota was still in action. I managed Nagrota, the military camp in Nagrota was the target." Azhar's article in JeM's Alqalam magazine, dated December 6, stated.
