Ex-SI shoots dead daughter-in-law

Kishtwar, Nov 22: A retired sub inspector of police shot dead his daughter-in-law in Kishtwar town on Thursday.
Chuni Lal fired upon his 38-year-old daughter-in-law Vaneeta Devi, wife of Ashok Kumar, of Lower Poochal, with his licensed weapon (12 bore rifle) resulted in her instant death. The incident took place in the wee hours Thursday.
After coming to know about the incident, local villagers rushed to the spot and later brought the matter into the notice of police.
A police party led by SHO Kishtwar immediately rush to the spot.
Police said the accused has been arrested while the dead body was shifted to Kishtwar hospital for post mortem.
The accused is said to be habitual of losing his cool and had fired upon his younger son Sanjay Kumar a few years ago over a land issue, while in another case police few years ago also seized his weapon which was released only few months ago to him.
The family members of the deceased said her murder was witnessed by her 8-year-old daughter, a Class 3 student, who is said to be in state of shock since the incident.
The father of the deceased told Early Times that they came to know about the incident in the morning.
He said he was unaware about the circumstances that led to the murder of his daughter, a mother of two minor children.
Police also detained husband of the dead woman who happens to be a Special Police Officer for questioning. He later released him so that he could perform the last rites of his wife.
The villagers termed the deceased woman as noble and hardworking housewife who took good care of her family including her father-in-law.
Speaking to Early Times, SSP Kishtwar Rajinder Gupta said that the 72 year old accused Chuni Lal had some dispute in the past and on Wednesday evening his daughter-in-law had gone to the house of her paternal uncle to participate in a family function.
The SSP said that after returning from the function, the deceased had brought packed dinner for her father-in-law, but later the accused was angry for not having been invited to the function.
He said that after some argument, the accused opened fire on his daughter-in-law, killing her on the spot.
