Jammu, Mar 8: Succumbing to the pressure of loyalists of Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, Congress high command today appointed Ghulam Nabi Azad as chairman of the campaign and election committee in place of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Ghulam Ahmed Mir.
According to official handout of the party, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal said that Congress president Rahul Gandhi has approved Campaign and Election Management Committee of Jammu and Kashmir Congress with Azad as chairman.
Earlier Mir was appointed as chairman of the same committee. Other members of the committee included Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Rigzin Zora, Tariq Hamid Karra, Saifuddin Soz, Tara Chand, Madan Lal Sharma, G M Saroori and Asgar Ali Karbalia as members.
Earlier on February 9 senior party leaders from J&K had urged upon central leadership of appoint leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad as head of election campaign when Mir was appointed as chairman.
Azad loyalists in Pradesh Congress were annoyed over violating protocol as leader of opposition (LoP's) name was placed at third number in the list of campaign and elections headed by Pradesh Congress Committee chief G A Mir.
Infuriated over being humiliated Azad had dissociated himself from various panels announced by Congress president, Rahul Gandhi for J&K. "I'm already member of several such panels of the party at national level and was surprised to see inclusion of my name in these state level committee", Azad had told media.
After Rahul Gandhi had nominated G A Mir was nominated as the head of the campaign committees in J&K and Azad's name was dropped from the top, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir had reacted sharply by disassociating himself from the campaign committees in Jammu and Kashmir.
