Suspension of Cross-LoC trade divides Jammu and Kashmir
Rattled Pakistan attacks New Delhi
4/22/2019 11:12:53 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 22: The recent decision of the Union Home Ministry to suspend Cross-LoC trade to check terror-related activities block entry into Kashmir of weapons, drugs and fake currency has evoked response in Kashmir and Jammu as well as Pakistan on expected lines. In Kashmir, "mainstream" leaders, separatists like Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and business houses have in one voice denounced Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused him of rolling back all the decisions taken by late PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has described as a "huge setback" the decision of the Union Government and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has termed it as an inhuman decision. NC vice-president Omar Abdullah has, on the other hand, expressed regret over the decision of New Delhi. All have said that PM Modi took this decision for votes. Many business houses expressed the view that the decision would hurt their financial interests and make the live of those engaged in Cross-LoC trade very difficult.
Significantly, Pakistan on Sunday took an exception to the decision of the PM and accused him of taking the decision unilaterally. It said that decision of the Government of India would further strain relations between the two countries and asked New Delhi to reverse its uncalled for decision.
Contrarily, the suspension of the Cross-LoC trade has evoked a favourable response. Almost all the business leaders in Jammu have supported the decision and spoken the language of the Union Home Minister. The Union home Ministry had on April 19 said that the Cross-LoC trade had been taken over by Pakistan and PoJK-based terror outfits, especially Hizbul Mujahideen, and Pakistan had been misusing it to promote terror-related activities in the Kashmir Valley.
The Jammu-based business leaders have said that the Cross-LoC trade was only helping certain "undesirable elements" and that the Government of India took the right step by suspending the Cross-LoC trade. Some even went to the extent of saying that the Government of India should have suspended it much earlier taking into consideration the security interests of the country.
The contradictory response the decision of the Home Ministry evoked in the state once again established there is nothing whatsoever common between the two provinces -- Jammu province and Kashmir province.
It bears recalling that the Cross-LoC trade with Pakistan was started during the time of AB Vajpayee and the man behind it was late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
