Early Times Report

KATHUA, May 2: The police had to cut a sorry figure in public after a stern action was taken against drug addicts by the locals of Kullian Badala area of Kathua, which has become notorious for the consumption and trading of banned substance "Chitta". Annoyed over the indifferent attitude of the police against the menace of drugs, the people themselves took action against the drug addicts who are suppliers and consumers of the deadly "Chitta" in the area. In the past few days, After getting fed up with the police's lack of concern, the people started catching the drug addicts, who are main source of supplying "Chitta" in the area since the last few days, and handing them directly to the police due to which around two dozen drug addicts were handed over to the police. The youth of Kullian Badal helped in taking the drug addicts of the village to a temporary police post and then further to the police stations and police posts. Surprisingly, the sale of "Chitta" in this area has been going on for several years now. Police have also constructed a temporary check post in the wake of the sale, but no one has benefited from it. With no let-up in the activities of the drug addicts, few local youths decided to come forward in order to prevent the others getting involved in drug addiction. However, the action taken against the drug addicts should have been done by the police but after the initiative of the people, the Following the action of locals, the police have now started resorting to rely on the drugs de-addiction centre in a bid to restore its credibility among the masses. The desperation of men in khaki to re-establish their reliability could be gauged from the fact that the drug de-addiction centre which was established four years ago by the police is now suddenly abuzz with all sorts of activity as earlier it hardly matters how many addicts were counseled and never made it public. However, now after catching the drug addicts in Kullian, the police have released their photos and videos showing that they also give counseling to the addicts. In such a case, the question is why the police didn't do all this beforehand and try to make people aware? When people started taking action on addicts themselves, then the police also released a picture of giving counseling at the drug de-addiction centre to save its credibility. However, complete failure of the police system to counter the drug menace is attracting severe criticism from all quarters.
