JAMMU, May 8: State Health and Medical Education Department's lack of interest can be gauged from the fact that only 400 Medical Officers, of the selected 921, have joined their place of posting in peripheral areas across Jammu and Kashmir and 437 appointments were cancelled recently.
Moreover, these 400 Medical Officers are also facing lots of problems in absence of accommodation and other basic amenities since they joined but the concerned department has no policy to provide basic facilities to them.
To overcome the shortage of doctors in rural areas, Jammu and Kashmir Government had advertised 1000 posts of Medical Officers but has completely failed to address the shortage of the doctors as medicos seem reluctant to go to rural areas for want of accommodation and other basic facilities.
A group of doctors approached Early Times saying since they joined at different health institutes across Jammu, they crave for basic facilities.
"Keeping in view of lack of interest to strengthen rural areas, maximum doctors chose not to join because of a number of unsolved issues like accommodation, vehicle convenience, lack of infrastructure including shortage of human resources, shortage of doctors, lack of career prospects and much more," they said adding that since independence the 'Babus' who sit on the higher post, for introducing new and advanced policies for the betterment of the patients as well as staff, have failed to make the system better.
They added, "We will also leave the job midway and move outside the state if things continue like this because neither we can think for higher study nor stand on the expectations of the department in this condition. The matter was taken with concerned authorities but they don't have any answer to our questions and asked us to adjust in the system if you want to survive. " |
