Congress high command sidelines Azad for 'poor' performance

Jammu, May 9: Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has been left sulking by the party high command as his services have been virtually rejected for Congress campaigning in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, which are in the last leg.
Even as five phases of the polls have been completed, presence of Ghulam Nabi Azad was almost negligible so far, including his home State Jammu Kashmir besides Rajasthan and Haryana, for which he is the incharge general secretary.
According to the sources in Congress, the party high command is not happy with Mr Azad, who is also feeling dejected ever since Pradesh Congress Committee president G A Mir managed to secure mandate from Anantnag Parliamentary constituency.
While elaborating, sources said that appointment of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC general secretary incharge for Uttar Pradesh and Congress mandate to G A Mir were the turning point in sidelining of Ghulam Nabi Azad in the party.
Priyanka Gandhi has publically admitted the organizational failure of Congress in Uttar Pradesh, where Mr Azad was incharge general secretary since long. Poor organizational working at ground level in UP and negative feedback about high profile functioning of Mr Azad has annoyed Priyanka Gandhi, who is learnt to have directed the party not to assign any important task to him in the elections, sources said.
What to talk of other States, even in Jammu and Kashmir where Ghulam Nabi Azad is the only charismatic leader who can attract votes for Congress in all three regions of the State, the party did not feel need of his services to the maximum extent.
Sidelining of Azad can be further judged from the fact that even in the Congress election committee for J&K, his name was earlier placed at number four after Nawang Rigzin Jora. Though following protest by Mr Azad, he was made head of the election committee, the party high command did not give him due weightage in the campaigning, which was evident in all the five phases.
Sources said that Azad is also dejected over party mandate to G A Mir, who is close to the Gandhi family, particularly Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Through 10 Janpath, Mir ensured that Azad may not get weightage and he managed to do it, sources added.
