Alliance with BJP defeated me, Mehbooba
PDP to pursue divisive agenda
5/25/2019 11:38:53 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 25: PDP chief and former BJP-made CM Mehbooba Mufti has finally spoken and explained why she and her party suffered a massive defeat in the just-held general elections. Mehbooba Mufti lost election from Anantnag constituency, got a paltry 30,000 votes from a constituency of almost 14 lakh voters and came third. The NC won the seat and the Congress was the runners up. The NC candidate could get only a little over 40,000 votes and won.
Reflecting on the causes of her defeat and defeat of the PDP, Mehbooba Mufti said that it was the PDP's alliance with the BJP, which didn't go well with the people of Kashmir and that became the fundamental factor for the defeat of her party.
"This (PDP-BJP alliance) was something people didn't kind of take well. They were angry about it. But it was done with a larger interest and larger vision for the people. It was less of a drawback and more of anger against our decision to form an alliance with the BJP. Yes, it played (alliance) a role in it (defeat)," she was quoted as saying.
Mehbooba Mufti further added: "I was expecting a lot of anger among the people; whatever have been my failings and shortcomings for the last couple of years. I was expecting the people to be angry. They have given love and shown affection to me in the past. So something must have angered them and they expressed it through the votes".
When asked "what would be your next step as the assembly elections in J&K are still pending?", she didn't give a clear-cut answer. She only said elections come and go, but our agenda will be to seek resolution of Kashmir. "We have a party which was made with a vision. Mufti Sayeed had established it with a vision. Our agenda is for the resolution of Kashmir, so we shall continue doing that. Elections come and go, people win and lose, that is part of politics. It doesn't anyway change things on the ground. Our fight is still the same and the situation is still the same on the ground. We have to fight and struggle for the resolution of the Kashmir issue".
"The party was not for the sake of elections. The party was formed with a purpose and my father wanted to bridge the gap and make J&K a bridge between India and Pakistan. That is still there and we will strive for that," she was further quoted saying.
It 's clear from what Mehbooba Mufti said that she would not deviate from the path that she treated after 1999 and that she would continue to pursue divisive agenda.
