Early Times Report

JAMMU, June 15: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as Independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency on Saturday conducted an extensive tour of sector1 and 2 of Model Town locality of Gangyal area and its vicinity. During his mass contact programme, the residents of these areas informed Munish Gupta about several day to day problems being faced by them particularly the issues being confronted by the after 2015 when PDP-BJP coalition government assumed power in the state. A majority of residents of Model Town alleged that the ex-MLA (Kavinder Gupta) after getting elected never visited their locality to take stock of their problems.
"We never saw Kavinder Gupta after he got elected as MLA from Gandhi Nagar Assembly segment," said several inhabitants of Model Town, Gangyal.
Expressing their dismay a large number of inhabitants of Sector 1 and 2 of Model Town, Gangyal said that heaps of garbage lay scattered on roads while the drains are choked with refuse adding that the condition of lanes is in shambles besides the problem of waste dumping in vacant plots is order of the day in their area, however, there is no one to listen to their woes and redress them despite repeated pleas at every possible platform.
A resident of Sector 2, Model Town, Gangyal, Harbhajan Singh told Munish Gupta that people in the area are generally fed up with the problem of dilapidated lanes and overflowing drains due to blockage arising out of waste material while several vacant plots in the locality have turned into mini garbage dumping sites. "The garbage is being dumped either in the vacant plots or near the drains as there is no provision of dustbin for collection of junk. The roads are in bad shape but the authorities have turned a blind eye. There is severe problem of water logging due to chocked drains. Due to blockage, the dirty water enters into houses," said Harbhajan Singh.
While the people of the area are facing several problems related to cleanliness and hygiene, a large number of residents in the area particularly those residing in Sector-2 of Model Town, who originally hail from Kashmir and are putting up here for more than a decade are still not registered here as voters.
These aggrieved residents informed Munish that they made numerous representations to former MLAs in this regard but to no avail adding that it is highly impractical for them to visit Kashmir to cast their votes as and when any election is held as they are residing here for decades now which is why all such cases should be granted voting rights so that they can participate in the democratic process. "I am originally from Mehjoor Nagar, Srinagar. Now, residing here for the last 8 years but have no voting right. I and my family never cast vote in Srinagar during all these years. So we should be allowed to register here as voters but despite raising this issue with the ex-MLAs we were not granted right to franchise," said Sandeep Singh of Sector-2, Model Town, Gangyal.
While Gurdeep Singh and Tejinder Singh, who are originally from Baramulla in Kashmir but residing in Model Town for the last 17 years also do not have voting rights here. The duo also demanded that they should be given voting rights here so that they could contribute in electing a representative of their choice. Both of them informed that several people who have no right of vote here are unable to cast votes as they do not go to Valley to exercise their franchise.
