Delay in Assembly poll because of extension of Central rule
6/18/2019 12:37:47 AM

Since the rule of the President has been extended by six months in Jammu and Kashmir one is uncertain about the proposed Assembly elections. Will the elections be held after the end of six months of President's rule which means that till December no elections will be held? And it is quite difficult for the Election Commission to hold the Assembly poll in mid winter in Kashmir? But the President's rule has been extended because of the incidents of violence and in south Kashmir, which has become volatile during the last one year, had one more incident in which six CRPF personnel were killed yesterday and the cabinet in New Delhi debated on the issue and the final verdict was announced by the Prime Minister. A meeting of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its approval for the extension of the Central rule which has been continuing in Jammu and Kashmir since June 20, 2018.
"Yes, it has been decided," Javadekar told reporters when asked whether the Cabinet gave its nod to extend President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir. After the Cabinet's nod, President Ram Nath Kovind will sign the proclamation for imposition of President's rule in the state and it will come into effect on June 20, a Home Ministry official said. However, the National Conference and the PDP are opposed to the extention of the Central rule because if not the PDP but the National Conference had a chance to win the Assembly election and form the Government in the state. There are other parties which support the extention of the President's rule on the plea that during the time the state was under the central rule no Assembly election can be held. These parties including the BJP wish to settle the law and order problem before the Assembly elections are held.
Prior to the union cabinet decision the Assembly poll was to be held somewhere in October-November and the National Conference was not ready to face the elections being held somewhere in September-November. Because this time the NC feels that the iron is hot and it needs a strike from the National Conference. But senior leaders are not going to listen to the wisdom of the union Cabinet which has decided to extend the Central rule by another six months because by the time the central rule was lifted things would have asssumed political stability and peace. This is what the NC is for and hence it should not rake up the issue of delay in the elections so that power is delayed to the NC.
