Amid tall claims of re-settling KPs, Janbaaz, so-called friendly siphais of J&K Police harass Pandit family

SRINAGAR, July 12: At a time when both the central and state governments are making tall claims about the return of Kashmiri Pandits to the valley a family of the community was stopped and 'harassed' today while they were moving towards Pampore to meet a family.
Sources told Early Times that a Kashmiri Pandit family was stopped by the Jammu & Kashmir Police at Pantha Chowk while they were on way to Pampore in Pulwama district to meet a family. The trigger happy cops did not allow the family to move ahead thus forcing them to retreat.
"One of the cops posted at the place acted in an indecent manner and misbehaved with the female members of the family. He acted in a manner as if he is top cop of the police and has all the authority to stop the family and that too at his own will," said sources.
Sources said that the police personnel told the Kashmiri Pandit family that only Kashmiris are allowed to move beyond the Pantha Chowk in the afternoon and the non-locals are not allowed to do so. They said the orders in this regard have come from the top and they cannot disobey the directives in this regard.
"The Kashmiri Pandit family spoke in Kashmiri in order to motivate the cops that they too are Kashmiris and should be allowed to move ahead. However, this too did not help the case and the family was not allowed to go to Pampore," said sources.
Sources said that a cop virtually threw away the official identity card of the male person of the family and said that he does not entertain the card.
"Had the family been travelling in a vehicle having registration number of Kashmir things might have been different. Since they were travelling in a Jammu registered vehicle the police stopped them and referred to them as tourists. This is the height of irony but there is no solution in sight," said sources.
Station House Officer, Pantha Chowk did not deem it fit to receive the calls of this correspondent. The officer in fact did not respond to the text message sent to him in order to ascertain the real nature of the problem.
