Early Times Report

Jammu, July 16: The residents of Last Morh area of Gandhi Nagar have been facing huge problems of sanitation where drains remain blocked, unclean for days making difficult for the residents to live in such unhygienic conditions.
Munish Gupta, Editor Early Times, who would be contesting upcoming assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency during his mass contact programme met the residents of Last Morh area of Gandhi Nagar and heard their problems. "Lanes and drains of this area are in dilapidated conditions and need immediate repair. We have been facing huge difficulties due to insanitation. Cleanliness of drains is not done regularly due to which foul smell emanate from the drain," said Rajinder Kumar, Balram Gupta of Patel Nagar Last Morh.
Manjeet Singh said that few residents have encroached upon one side drain and using the drain of other side of lane. "I have lodged complaint to the Municipal Corporation against this issue but till date no action has been taken by the authority. There are two drains both side of every lane but some resident near my house have closed drain of their side and using drains of my side which is against rule but department didn't take any action against this gross violation," he said.
Surinder Kumar Sharma, H.No. 53 of Hazi Pura Last Morh pointed out the issue of absence of grills on drains. "Open drains present bad picture of the area. Garbage and polythenes get accumulated in the drains which block it and dirty of water of houses start overflowing. Blocked drains give birth to infected bacteria, germs," he said.
Some people raised the issue of encroachment of main drain and road by some shopkeepers. "We talked to the concerned leader for help but he didn't do anything despite the fact that road along the drain is used by the residents of the area. They have encroached upon the road by putting their stuff on the road creating hurdle for smooth movement of the locals," said Rajesh Bagal, Vishaw Inder Gupta.
Neetu Choudhary also raised the issue of sanitation. "Drains remain choked, lanes are not cleaned properly which has made our life unbearable. Concerned department should take action for its regular cleaning," she said. Swaran Lata alleged that their family has been facing problem of garbage dumping by the residents in front of their house in an abandoned collapsed house. We requested the concerned authority and the cleaning was done only once but it has been months the garbage dump which has grown into a huge pile has not been removed.
The residents of Last Morh have been facing stray dogs menace too. "There are huge numbers of stray dogs in our area and it becomes difficult and quite risky to cross the lanes. We asked the concerned authority to take action to remove stray dog menace but no action was taken,' she said. "Drains are not cleaned regularly and foul smell makes us unbearable to breathe in. Relatives don't like to visit here due to pathetic conditions of lanes and drains. The main Nallah of Patel Nagar remain choked and has never been cleaned for long time due to which it overflows and dirty water gushes into the houses and the temple premises," said Vaishali and Pooja Lamba. When contacted the Health Officer Jammu Municipal Corporation Dr Saleem Khan, he said that action will be taken on the complaints and their issues related to sanitation will redressed.
