DB directs AAI counsel to apprise court over time schedule of runway expansion

Jammu, Aug 8: In a Public Interest Litigation filed by Advocate Ravi Abrol seeking directions to respondents for upgrading the Jammu Airport, at par with the international airports keeping in view the large number of pilgrims visiting Jammu from abroad to pay obeisance at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine.
A Division Bench of State High Court Comprising Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Sindhu Sharma after hearing Advocate General DC Raina for the State whereas Adv Inderjeet Gupta for the Airport Authority of India, directed AAI to apprise the Court about the time schedule during which expansion of runway will be completed. The Court also apprised of the present status of the expansion.
When the PIL came-up for hearing, DB observed that Advocate General, on instructions from Sanjeev Verma, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, submitted that whatever land was required for expansion of runway, the possession thereof was handed over to the Airport Authority of India in August 2018.
DB further observed that the aforesaid fact is not disputed by learned counsel appearing for the Airport Authority of India and he seeks time to apprise the Court about the time schedule during which expansion of runway will be completed. The Court be also apprised of the present status of the expansion.
During the course of hearing it was further pointed out that OWP No. 542/2018 is pending in this Court. In the aforesaid petition, challenge has been made to the transfer of 277 kanals of land situated at Nagrota to the Animal Husbandry Department in lieu of land to be transferred near the Jammu Airport, for expansion of the Airport.
DB Directed the aforesaid petition be listed for hearing along with the present petition on the next date of hearing. --(JNF)
