Jammu, Sept 22: Contrary to what speculations are about annual Durbar Move in Jammu and Kashmir, the union government is in no mood to bid adieu to the practice that is in vogue for more than hundred years.
Speculations earlier were rife that after declaring Jammu and Kashmir as a union territory on August 5 this year, the union government may do away with the practice of annual Durbar move and may retain offices at Srinagar and Jammu respectively. However, insiders reveal that no such proposal has been mooted by the Jammu and Kashmir administration and that the move will continue to remain in vogue, at least for now. "There is no such move in the offing that there could be no Durbar move this year. The practice will continue and not even a single consideration has been made that could suggest its seizure anytime time soon," says a senior official.
The practice of Durbar move involves shifting of government offices for the period of Six months every year from Srinagar to Jammu and vice versa. The offices from November to April function in Jammu which was the winter capital of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state and from May to Oct, the offices would function at Srinagar- the summer capital. Many voices in the past were heard advocating that in view of the plethora of state funds being spent, the practice should no longer exist.
As the union government scraped Article 370 last month on August 5 and bifurcated the state into the two union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, all eyes were set on government over whether it will turn more than a century old practice irrelevant and non-pertinent.
As per the reports coming to fore, the union government has in categorical terms informed this to the Jammu and Kashmir administration that the Durbar Move practice should be allowed to thrive and shouldn't be, in anyway, made inapplicable on the ground. "The union government doesn't want the cancellation of Durbar Move. The practice was started by Maharaja Ranbir Singh and is a Dogra legacy. It should not be trashed in any way. Furthermore, if any such move is initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir administration, it will create wedge between Jammu and Srinagar and will turn the taboo deeper and dense. Therefore, the government is very meticulously taking every decision so that same couldn't have far reaching consequences and shouldn't sow the seeds of discord and create new fault lines in the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir," says another senior official, adding that this year as well the traditional Durbar move practice will continue as per the routine and not even a single change in the entire proposal shall be made.
Meanwhile, it will be safer to assume for now that at least this Dogra practice has not been tinkered with and will be allowed to thrive. |
