Parking on Srinagar's Airport Road to be banned for security reasons
11/16/2019 10:36:51 PM

Early Times Report
srinagar, Nov 16: In a significant development, the Jammu and Kashmir government is likely to impose ban on parking of any vehicles on the high security airport road in Srinagar.
Sources said following alerts from the intelligence agencies, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have picked up the issue of banning parking of vehicles on the eight kilometer stretch between the Srinagar International Airport and Ram Bagh.
Official sources said since the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, the roadside parking on the Airport Road had become a major cause of traffic jams on this VIP route.
"There have been instances where the VIPs had to get stranded in jams that were caused by nothing but the roadside parking of vehicles," said a senior police official on the condition of anonymity.
Explaining the significance of the Airport Road further, he said across the country sensitive roads like the one leading to the airport are kept void of any stray parking. "Such norms have to be brought into action in Kashmir as well and starting from this(Airport Road)," the official added.
Officials in the first phase, fine stickers would be pasted on the wrongly parked vehicles and that driver would need to visit the office Traffic Police to know about the status of the fine imposed.
It is pertinent to mention that the Airport Road is the only road link to the Srinagar airport and also a key connectivity between the summer capital and adjoining Budgam district.
"Given the prevalent situation and inputs of possible terror attacks it has been unanimously decided to formally discourage roadside parking on this strategically important road," said an official.
Since the abrogation of Article 370, Kashmir has been witnessing uneasy calm amid inputs of possible terror strikes. Given the threats, the summer capital of Srinagar has been alert.
