China can't be relied upon
12/19/2019 10:06:00 PM
Pakistan's all-weather friend China once again tried to rake up Kashmir at United Nations Security Council (UNSC) but China's request was turned down by the UNSC and it was once again made clear that it is a bilateral issue which the UNSC cannot discuss.
Due to the firm stand taken by the 15-member UNSC, China had to withdraw its request. Prior to this, China had made a similar attempt to rake up Kashmir at the UNSC in August this year but that time also the Forum maintained that it's an internal matter of India and no discussion can take place. Since the day Jammu & Kashmir has been reorganized Pakistan has left no stone unturned to internationalize Kashmir. China, who has made huge investments in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), too seems to have got rattled due to the bold stand taken by the Government of India (GoI) and it has tried to carry forward Pakistan's agenda.
China it seems has realized that if Pakistan keeps on supporting terrorists operating in Kashmir and refuses to dismantle the terror network in PoK then there is every possibility about tensions escalating in the region. And Pakistan could loose the PoK. Soon after China made an attempt to rake up the Kashmir at the UNSC, Army Chief Bipin Rawat sounded an alarm that tensions along the LoC could escalate as Pakistan has been resorting to unprovoked ceasefire violations since August 5 when the GoI announced its decision to abrogate J&K's special status and divided it into two Union Territories, J&K and Ladakh. In a related development, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently stated there is nothing to talk with Pakistan except the issue of PoK, which has been under its illegal occupation for the past seven decades. India's changed foreign policy is the precursor about the fact that anything can happen anytime and the issue of retrieving PoK from Pakistan tops GoI's agenda.
When the Chinese President Xi Ping visited India in October this year he held detailed deliberations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The joint statement issued by both the leaders did not make any mention of Kashmir. Chinese premier maintaining silence over Kashmir had left Pakistan red-faced at that point of time. But now China has once again tried to rake up the Kashmir at the UNSC. This has put a question mark over China's designs. On one hand it wants India to ensure that tensions don't escalate in the region while on the other hand it is trying to carry forward Pakistan's agenda. The crux of the matter is that China cannot be trusted.
