SRINAGAR, Dec 21: The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved Rupees 300 crore under Police Modernization Plan (PMP) to upgrade the work process of policemen and police stations in both Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Police Modernization Plan is considered to be a major boost for the police of Jammu and Kashmir which have been fighting against militancy in the neck to neck with other security forces which include Army and Central Reserve Police Force.
Under the Police Modernization Plan, the Jammu and Kashmir will procure hi-tech gadgets, mobile commando vehicles and other equipment to ensure better policing in the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Union Territory.
Highly placed sources said the money will also be used to procure 40 mobile commando vehicles, bulletproof shields, helmets, body cameras beside other important items that are needed for daily policing.
Sources further said, in the beginning, Jammu and Kashmir police will procure 40 MCV's, among 40 MCV's 30 will be used in J&K U.T and rest 10 will be for Ladakh U.T. It is important to mention here that Ladakh will have its own police wings and gadgets will be distributed among the cops there.
"The process is likely to be completed within the coming months and will be completed next year after a proper review as we believe many weapons have become obsolete and new weapons are need of an hour", sources added.
"Not only will the police get a hi-tech gadget, but also police stations will be fully equipped with the latest technology to keep so that timely action takes place on all the cases. While as, all the police stations are likely to be interlinked with each other but is definitely going to take time", sources added.
Sources also said that all the police stations will be interred linked with each other at the zonal, district and regional levels. The data of all the police stations will be accessible to Police control Rooms of each district region and the UT.
The J&K police would also procure modern means of crowd control to do away with the pellets, bullets and other lethal means of controlling protests. "The new means include water cannons, color water cannons, tear gas, use of gas that causes itching in body and other items", sources said.
A top police official said, "It was a need of an hour. These hi-tech gadgets are definitely going to help and boost police in Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory". He added, this place is very volatile and it will give an upper hand to the police to tackle anti-national and hardcore elements in the valley. Kashmir has witnessed so many things and now hi-tech gadgets will keep the Jammu and Kashmir police at par with other security forces".
