Confusion prevails
12/29/2019 11:44:44 PM
Congress party is making all the possible attempts to keep the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) alive across the country and its leaders are trying to tell the people that National Population Register (NPR) is a first step towards the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Protests against the CAA have fizzled out across the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made it clear that there has been no discussion over the NRC within the Government and the Opposition is spreading lies to instigate the masses. After the PM statement, situation has normalized and people are back on their jobs but the Opposition seems to be in no mood to relent. Top Congress leaders who have remained in the power in the past are trying to tell the people that NRC is coming and to substantiate their argument they are referring to the statements made by the BJP leaders in the past. They are ignoring the fact that Prime Minister is the ultimate authority and his is the final word. He said no NRC means there will be no NRC. People of India have understood it but the Opposition seems to be hell bent upon twisting the facts.
The NPR announced by the BJP-led NDA government was the idea of Congress-led UPA government and it was then Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, who had mooted this idea. But after floating the idea, the UPA dispensation slept over the issue.
After the BJP-led government came into power in 2014 for the first term, it picked up the threads from where the Congress had left it and carried forward the projects which suited them. PM Modi changed the soft policies of his predecessors and during the past five years has driven home a point that no country can take India for granted.
From day one attempts are being made to project the CAA as anti- Muslim but the fact remains that it has got nothing to do with the Muslims who are the permanent residents of the country. The notion that Muslims would have to prove their identity has been spilled. It has become clear that the CAA is meant for providing Indian citizenship to the refugees from persecuted minorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
The Opposition needs to understand that it cannot pull this issue anymore as people have understood that resorting to violence is no solution and there is no threat to any community from NPR and CAA.
