Will government change nomenclature of SKUAST-J to Jammu specific?
Scrapping of holiday on Sheikh Abdullah’s birthday, Martyrs’ Day
1/4/2020 11:50:33 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan 4: With the scrapping of State holiday on National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s birth anniversary alongside Martyrs’ Day by J&K Union Territory administration, the long pending demand of Jammu people for changing nomenclature of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences & Technology (SKUAST) Jammu to Jammu Agriculture University has taken momentum.
Sources told Early Times that several civil society members, social and cultural organizations of Jammu had raised the issue of changing nomenclature of SKUAST-J with previous governments from time to time in the past. Moreover, the students and teaching faculties of SKUAST Jammu had been continuously taking up this demand on various platforms.
“Despite their consistent efforts and struggles, their demand was not never given due consideration by the previous dispensations. Even during BJP government in erstwhile J&K State, the demand didn’t get space,” they said further adding that the recent decision of UT Administration of scrapping holidays on Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah birthday anniversary and martyr day, the hope of Jammu people regarding their demand has got new life.
National Conference party during its regime had named the Agriculture University as Sher-e-Kashmir Agricultural University of Jammu after its founder’s name, but there was a strong resentment among the farming community, civil society and intellectuals of Jammu region regarding the nomenclature of this agricultural varsity who alleged that it was a deliberate attempt to suppress the aspirations and identity of the people of Jammu region despite the fact that Jammu division is the most suitable place for agricultural business as this region contains all the three agroclimatic zones namely – subtropical, intermediate and temperate which are not available in any other area of the country.
