Early times Report

Jammu, Jan 29: The casual approach of Agriculture Universities of the State in maintaining database of their researches, which are done in development of agriculture and other allied fields, has virtually deprived the farmers to take intended benefits.
Sources told Early Times that Universities were bound to maintain data of their researches but on the contrary they didn’t maintain a database of developed varieties indicating details such as characteristics of varieties developed, date of proposal by the breeder, references of University Varietal Evaluation Committee (UVEC), State Seed Sub Committee (SSSC) and Central Seed Commission (CSC) including their recommendations and notification references of Government of India.
“It has been observed that the notified varieties developed by the University from time to time had not been got registered to safeguard the interests of the breeders by preventing unauthorized exploitation of such varieties/ seeds for commercial advantage by unintended people,” they said.
They further said that the university administration has always been claiming that the database of developed varieties which has been maintained at divisional level and by UVEC would also be maintained in Directorate of Research and that registration of notified varieties had been undertaken and proposals of varieties released by the University had been submitted but the statements made by universities are actually contrary to their claims.
The main objective of the maintaining research database was to extend all technological support to farmers to give boost to the agriculture sector of the State but non- serious approach of the universities have been defeating the indented objective.
