8 years on, Sudhwala- Sooyian bridge still awaits completion
2/23/2020 11:32:51 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

POONCH, Feb 23:Public Works Department (R&B) has failed to complete the construction of Sudhwala-Sooyian bridge in Mendhar area of Poonch district even eight years after its foundation stone was laid.
Missing several deadlines, the construction of the bridge was started in June 2013 at an estimated cost of Rs 54 lakh and was supposed to be completed in March 2015, however, it’s completion is nowhere in the sight.
A group of locals at Sooyian said that despite passing many deadlines, the government is yet to complete the project thereby making people to face inconveniences of all sorts.
They alleged that the work has been going on at a snail’s pace while people continue to suffer and take other routes in the area to commute.
Abdul Rehman Khan, a local at Sooyian said it is a complete failure of the government. People living in the area extended cooperation to the authorities but they have failed to complete the project within the stipulated timeframe, he said.
Another local Yaqoob Ahmed said it has become a routine for the authorities to initiate a project, construct some pillars or plinth and then abandon it.
“It is unfortunate that government always extends deadlines rather than making officials accountable for their failure to complete projects on time," he said.
The bridge was to be completed in 2015 but the deadline was extended to 2019. We don’t know whom to blame, the locals said.
“A decade has passed since the work on the bridge was started and it is still incomplete. If the authorities don’t have funds, then they should ensure availability of the same so that the bridge could be completed which has already missed several deadlines,” the locals said.
When contacted SDM Mendhar Dr Sahil Jandyal said that AEE, PWD has informed that the work of the bridge is on the verge of completion. It got delayed due to some problem with the contractor.
