Ensure timely completion of developmental projects: Munish tells administration
Drain left uncovered since 4 yrs at Satwari Chowk, nuisance for traders, customers

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Feb 29: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Saturday urged the authorities to ensure timely completion of developmental projects and make sure that no work is left midway so as to avoid unnecessary inconvenience to the masses.
Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency said, “It’s a pity that the people instead of being benefitted from the development projects are ending up getting problems from them largely due to unplanned execution of works which at times are left unfinished.”
He said that general public particularly traders near Satwari Chowk are forced to bear the brunt of the laidback approach of the concerned authorities as a project of developing drainage system is still incomplete.
Meanwhile, a group of shopkeepers including Satpal, Rahul, Kamal Kishore, Durgesh Singh, Monu, Anil Gupta, Vijay Verma, Sanjay and Sanjeev Sharma in Satwari Chowk area while narrating their tale of woes to Early Times said, "The concrete slab covering on a wide drain in front of our shops was dismantled about four years ago to carry out some development activity but even after all these years the cover on the drain is yet to be re-laid.”
“Uncovered drain alongside the highway is posing a grave threat not only to our customers but also to shopkeepers of the area as well as the pedestrians. The drain lying uncovered here is creating a mess as the stink emanating due to blockade has made our lives miserable. The situation is really worse in such a populated market,” they added.
The traders of the area informed that as many as 22 shopkeepers are suffering due to the negligence of the concerned authorities adding that they fail to understand that why the portion of the drain from Nai Basti side upto Satwari Chowk left without being covered while the section onwards has been covered with a concrete slab.
“The customers are not willing to buy anything especially eatables from our shops as the open drain full of sludge and garbage presents an unhygienic scene and people view it as an open invitation to diseases. Our business has got a severe beating,” said one of the shopkeepers.
He said that they made repeated requests to the local leaders as well as the authorities to cover the drain with concrete slab or steel mesh as people particularly passers-by are at a risk of facing mishaps while crossing the drain, the slab of which has been kept open.
“A girl had fallen into the open drain a few days back. She not only received injuries but her newly bought mobile handset also got completely damaged due to the awkward fall. Such incidents happen quite often but it has failed to move the concerned authorities from its inertia,” he said.
Another shopkeeper said that the garbage continuously gets collected inside the drain in absence of a cover which ultimately wreaks havoc during rainy season as the dirty water enters the shops and residences nearby.
