Amid COVID-19 threat, politicians go missing in J&K UT
3/22/2020 10:49:05 PM

Early Times Report
jammu, Mar 22: Amid COVID-19 threat politicians across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir have gone into their shells.
After the fear gripped the J&K that the deadly virus can create havoc in the Union Territory, political leaders of the various parties have taken a back seat.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "It seems that politicians want to ensure that they stay away from people to keep themselves safe. Anyway, these leaders had soon disappeared from the scene in 2015 when the Peoples Democratic Party and Bharatiya Janata Party had joined hands in Jammu and Kashmir to form the government."
He said, "Jammu based leaders after attaining the power turned their backs towards the electorate without realizing that they will have to come back to the people to seek their mandate again."
The analyst said, "On Sunday people observed complete Janata curfew in Jammu on the call of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Had any Jammu based leader given the call no one would have responded. Even when the assembly elections were held people voted for Modi and not for the local candidates. Many voters even didn't know the names of the candidates, who were contesting the elections."
He said, "The outbreak of COVID-19 has created a scare in the country, including Jammu region, leaders need to wake up and respond to the crisis by assuring the people that they are with them and they need not worry. It has been observed that whenever any natural calamity strikes J&K, leaders are first ones to run away. They cannot afford to show their back to the people at this point of time. This COVID-19 threat will fizzle out along with the time but actions of the leaders will be remembered always."
An observer said, "The government has given clear cut instructions that people should maintain social distancing. One cannot expect leaders to go out and hold mass gatherings but they can at least use their influence to tell the administration what needs to be done to keep the residents safe in their constituencies."
He said, "The COVID-19 threat is knocking at our doors and the administration is taking all the possible steps to contain it but the politicians, who have represented the people in the past need to become proactive and ensure that the people remain safe during this hour of crisis."
Another analyst said, "People of Jammu don't expect much from the politicians as they are aware about the fact that these leaders are only paper tigers and don't know how to handle crisis. Had they been so concerned they would have worked towards upgrading the health infrastructure in Jammu region."
