Shopkeepers fleecing residents of Rajouri during COVID-19 lockdown

Rajouri, Mar 29: The residents of Rajouri district have reportedly being fleeced by the shopkeepers dealing in essential commodities during COVID-19 lockdown particularly in far flung areas, which has been making their lives difficult due to shortage of resources.
Sources told Early Times that the shopkeepers in remote villages have been taking advantages of this lockdown and selling essential commodities on exorbitant rates.
“Many consumable items are being sold on double prizes. Not only this, even expiry date eatable products are being sold without fear. I went to purchase fasting flour to the nearby shop for observance of Navratra, but shopkeeper sold me expiry packet of flour. The manufacturing date of packing was March 2019 and its expiry was July 2019 but such expiry products are still being sold in the markets putting the lives of the people in grave danger,” said a resident proffering anonymity.
He further said that when he complaint to the shopkeeper, he didn’t realize his mistake and said that he can’t do anything in this matter.
Besides, the other items like potatoes and onions are also being sold on high rates, which can be gauged from the fact that these stuffs which used to be sold at the rate of Rs 20-30 per kg before lockdown are now being sold at the rate of Rs 50-60, which is beyond the reach of poor people living in far flung areas.
People have appealed to the Rajouri administration to take strong action against such shopkeepers who are fleecing people during these testing times, when entire state has come under the threat of COVID 19.
When, ADC Rajouri, Sher Singh, was contacted in this connection, he said that action will be taken against defaulters. He further said that after receiving many such complaints, administration has constituted several teams for inspection and checking black marketing so that people may get essential commodities on genuine price. Meanwhile administration has also issued a helpline number for general public’s assistance.
