KVK-Leh: Standing with the farmers’ in time of COVID-19

JAMMU, May 4: Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh has been standing with the farming community. At this crucial time when everything is locked down and movement of any type is restricted, Krishi Vigyan Kendra has been in the forefront motivating, guiding and facilitating the farming community.
Farmers were educated about the pandemic and were advised to practice social distancing, frequent washing of hands, wearing masks and others measures to be taken at home and in the fields. Farm advisories and livestock advisories were also published in the local newspapers. Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh also ensured that farming community does not suffers either from the lack of quality seeds or by lack of technical advice.
Regular advice regarding various aspects of vegetable production and livestock health was given to the farmers through Whatsapp group. Phone calls of farmers from different villages are being received as well as individual phone calls are being made to the farmers to brief them and to address their queries. Quality vegetable seedlings have been distributed among the farmers’ of the region. The youths are regularly being updated about various entrepreneurship and agri preneurship programmes.
Dr. D. Namgyal, Head KVK-Leh, the farming community is regularly being advised on different aspects of crop cultivation like nursery raising, manure management, maintaining appropriate plant to plant distance, insect pest and disease management and other aspects of vegetable cultivation. He further informed that scientists of KVK are regularly attending phone calls from the farmers. The timely intervention of KVK-Leh has ensured that the vegetable sowing and nursery raising for seedlings is not affected due to lock down in this cold arid zone. The farming community of the region has also acknowledged the efforts of KVK-Leh in this testing time.
