In Kashmir, barbers cornered, ‘influential’ parlor spared
5/5/2020 12:26:17 AM
Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 4: Even as the government has banned operations of barbershops and parlors in Red Zones across the country, in the summer capital of Srinagar, complaints of alleged discrimination with the business community are pouring in.
In the last over a month of the lockdown, the government has sealed several shops that were defying the restrictions.
Official sources said in Kashmir a number of barbershops were also closed for having defied lockdown to entertain customers.
But the members of the barbers fraternity in Srinagar said only the small shops which didn’t have “influence” are being sealed for defiance of norms whereas “influential ones are being allowed to work.”
Citing example, they said one influential saloon has been running its business in Hazratbal locality of Srinagar.
“The shop of a poor barber is sealed for indefinite period but parlor of influential person is allowed to run,” said a barber.
“This particular parlor has branches not only across the country but also in Srinagar, how can such a venture be allowed to operational,” said some residents of Hazratbal locality.
They said even though the matter was brought into the notice of the concerned, no action has been taken as yet.
“We had formally informed the administration about the issue but our complaint fell on deaf ears,” said the locals.
“The beauty parlor is run by a one influential person who enjoys big support in the corridors of power and thus nobody touches him,” said some concerned citizens.
It is pertinent to mention that beauty parlors have emerged as super-spreaders of the novel coronavirus in the country.
In north India in particular, some parlors had been seen as the transmitters of the ailment as the infected clients had got the ailment spread to others through the parlors.
When contacted a senior official said the complaint about Hazratbal has come to their notice and was being looked into. “No indiscipline will be tolerated,” the official said
