Smart meters will curb power pilferage Power scenario this summer will be better than last year Jammu, Udhampur towns to witness scheduled curtailment Have succeeded in maintaining power 24x7 amid lockdown

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 9: Managing Director Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) Yasha Mudgal on Saturday said that installation of smart meters in Jammu will commence from July this year.
In an exclusive interview to Early Times the MD JPDCL said that the Corporation has been working on Smart Metering Project for quite some time now, and in this connection JK Government has entered into an agreement with IDCPCL, a PSU. “The IDCPCL will install 80,000 smart meters in Jammu in first phase. They are conducting a survey. Some delay has been caused due to the outbreak of COVID-19,” she added.
Mudgal said, “The main motive behind installing smart meters is to curb power pilferage and introduce power reforms by minimizing human intervention. The smart metering will be will be completed in the entire region in next 2 to 3 years.”
The MD JPDCL said that scheduled power curtailment during peak summer will continue. “We have to maintain a balance as we receive a limited power supply and then distribute it. People will be informed about scheduled power curtailment in advance,” she added.
Referring to curtailment schedule during current summer season, the MD JPDCL said that Jammu and Udhampur towns are almost metered. “These towns will witness scheduled curtailment. May be sometimes we will have to increase the load shedding hours to safeguard the grid system due to overloading. Summer season has just begun. July is considered to be a peak. There are possibilities about unscheduled curtailments taking place in July month,” she added.
“We can only say that the power scenario this year will be much better than the last year. We are working on it. Replacement time of a damaged transformer will be minimized so that people do not suffer in hot weather. For this we are trying to increase the buffer stock. This time we are also going to appoint an incharge for every transformer. He would be responsible for the health of that transformer and would maintain load on it. If the transformer develops any snag the incharge will be held acco

“During COVID-19 my office has remained open 24x7. To keep systems working has been a big challenge for us during lockdown but we have courageously faced it. We have succeeded in maintaining power supply round the clock in all the areas,” she said.
She praised all the employees of the corporation for working relentlessly during lockdown period. “They have worked very hard and deserve appreciation for performing their duties with dedication and sincerity in these difficult times.” The MD JPDCL said that arranging movement passes for the field workers was a “very difficult job.” “Our teams had to reach everywhere to redress any complaint.
