Mother is a word which fills everybody with love and emotion. Mothers love for her children cannot be fathomed and compared with anything on earth .Her level of forgiving is unmatchable. Mothers play a huge role in moulding the mind of a child. A mother can understand her infant without communication. Mother is a precious gift from God. God may not be present everywhere that is why He created mother. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world ‘’, is a common phrase derived from a poem written by William Ross Wallace. The role of mother has serious impact in shaping the character, attitude and everything of a person. The influence of the mother during formative years of a child has a vital role to play in shapping the child’s behavior, development and emotional growth. It is the prayer of mother that keeps the family strong. The mother is indeed the defining factor which can bring a great change in society. In Hindu Philosphy God creates, sustains and destroys the universe but the energy which performs such functions is called Shakti (Divine Mother). The saying,’’ Matri Devo Bhavah’’ in itself speaks of boundless and all encompassing power of the biological mother ,a power that resonates with that of Divinity. Mother is the very embodiment of qualities such as love, tolerance, sacrifice and selfless service to her children. Also religions give high position to mother like,’’ Heaven lies beneath the feet of mother ‘’.There is only one relationship in this mortal world which scores above all known relationships on this earth i.e. of mother . The mothers day begin in the year 1908 when Anna Jarvis organized a memorial for her mother Ann Jerves a peace activist used to treat and care wounded soldiers of American Civil War. She wanted to honour all the mothers of the world who have done a lot for their families and society. By her efforts most of US states started celebrating mothers day as a local holiday and the West Virgina the home state of Jarvis become the first state holiday in year 1910. America signed the proclamation in the year 1914. In this way present mothers day came into existence and is adapted in countries like India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Italy and many more. The day is an event to honour and acknowledge the contribution, efforts made by the mothers in our society.
Mothers day is celebrated world wide, traditions vary depending on the country. In Thailand mothers day is always celebrated in august on the birthday of Queen Sirikit. Another alternate celebration of mother’s day can be found in Ethiopia, where families gather to sing songs and eat a large feast as part of Antrosht, a multi day celebration honouring mothers day. Families also celebrate mothers day by giving mothers a day off from activities like cooking or other household chores. Mothers day has also been used a date for launching political or feminist causes. In 1968 Coretta Scott King wife of Mortin Luther King Jr used mothers to host a march in support of oppressed women and children.
