EARLY TIMES REPORT

ANANTNAG, July 26: A Municipal Committee President, who was discouraged by the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir during this pandemic, on Sunday, was appreciated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his commitment to fight COVID-19 by making a low cost sprayer machine. Mohd Iqbal, a Municipal Committee President of Dooru was applauded by the Prime Minister in ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on Sunday.
His services were recognized by PM Modi for his contribution towards society by making a low cost Sprayer Machine at the cost of Rs. 50,000 and addressed the issue of Sanitization in his area in a very meticulous manner.
“In Anantnag, Mohammed Iqbal who is the Municipal President needed a sprayer for sanitization and he realized that he will have to get a machine from a different town which costs close to six lakh rupees. So he made a sprayer machine costing Rs 50000 through his own efforts,” Prime Minister said, however didn’t tell the complete story that compelled the Municipality President to make a low cost Sprayer Machine. According to details, the Municipality President had received cold response from the authorities after a sprayer machine provided to him and his municipality was allegedly retained by another municipal committee for fumigation purposes thus depriving Dooru Municipality from this machine.
In the month of March-April, the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies Kashmir provided Sewer Suction Machine for carrying out fumigation in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Dooru Municipal Committee Anantnag but a month later the vehicle was retained by Anantnag Municipal Council, Early Times learnt from official sources.
They said that on 20th of April 2020 vide No. DULB/G/7722-25, Director Urban Local Bodies Kashmir wrote to the Chief Executive Officer of Anantnag Municipal Council directing him to retain the Sewer Suction Machine at Municipal Committee Dooru till the covid-19 is over.
“It hurt me when authorities at Municipal Council Anantnag refused to provide me the machine and after that I decided to make a similar machine for fumigating the market and infected areas,” Mohmmad Iqbal told Early Times over phone.
He said that an officer, who is presently posted at Pahalgam, told him on phone to bring Sewer Suction Machine to Anantnag for registering the vehicle with the Motor Vehicle Department but in Anantnag they retained the vehicle. “That day they (employees of Anantnag Municipal Council broke my heart,” he added.
Iqbal says that he was the first person to start fumigation in Anantnag however his opponents planned to down play his efforts by retaining his machine. “I won because me and my team worked tirelessly without the support and the machinery,” he said while thanking Prime Minister for naming him in ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
