Confused Omar trying hard to keep himself relevant
‘If NC disintegrates, he may have to seek voluntary retirement from politics’

Early times Report

Jammu, Aug 1: Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah has ended up in a quandary after writing an Oped in a national daily.
Omar’s statement that he won’t contest the assembly elections till J&K remains a Union Territory has apparently triggered a storm within his party.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said that NC’s chief spokesman Aga Ruhullah saying goodbye to the party has brought the fissures within the NC to fore. “The resentment within the NC has been brewing for long and Ruhullah’s resignation seems to be a beginning,” he added.
The analyst said that Omar has hinted that he is in no mood to flog the dead horse and he wants to move on but the people associated with him are posing serious questions and are seeking answers. “Omar has realized that his party is on the brink and it may not be that easy for him to head the flock which has lost interest in the politics. He is trying to keep his party intact but his attempts are unlikely to prove successful as the cracks within the NC are wide and open,” the analyst added.
Soon after Ruhullah tendered his resignation, National Conference, Member Parliament, Mohammad Akbar Lone stated that tendering resignations won’t bring the statehood or Article 370 back. “Lone’s statement was a clear hint that he supports Omar’s stand and the NC should look towards the future rather than harping about the past,” said an observer.
He claimed that NC leaders have realized that their party has become “irrelevant” and if they keep on beating round the bush, they will end up acting as mute spectators. “Emergence of new parties and faces is an ample proof that politics won’t stop and the things will move on. If NC leaders don’t get over the hangover of abrogation of Article 370, their party will become a history. The NC leaders need to look towards their bête-noire PDP, which has crumbled under its own weight.”
The observer said, “Omar seems confused and clueless. He seems to have no plan to keep himself relevant. If his party gets disintegrated, he will be left with no other option other than to seek voluntary retirement from the politics.”
