SRINAGAR, Sept 7: The 270-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only all weather road connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed again on Monday afternoon due to fresh landslides and shooting stones.
Meanwhile, the historic 86-km-long Mughal road and the national highway, the only road linking Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh with Kashmir, were through for vehicles carrying essentials and fresh fruits. Only one-way traffic from Jammu to Srinagar was allowed this morning on the highway, a traffic police official said Monday afternoon.
But , he said, traffic on the highway was suspended again this afternoon due to fresh landslides. However, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has pressed into service machines and men to clear the landslides to put through the traffic, he added.
He said traffic will resume only after receiving green signal from the NHAI and traffic police personnel posted on the highway. Due to frequent landslides and shooting stones, only one-way traffic was being allowed on the highway. Today vehicles, including those carrying essentials were to ply from Jammu to Srinagar, he said , adding no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction.
Vehicles had to cross Nagrota between 0500 hrs to 1100 hrs and Udhampur between 0600 hrs to 1200 hrs, he said, adding no vehicle would be allowed after the deadline. He said only vehicles carrying fresh vegetable are allowed to ply on Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir to Poonch and Rajouri in Poonch.
Similarly, vehicles loaded with essentials are allowed to ply from Sonamarg in central Kashmir to other side of the Zojila Pass on Srinagar-Leh highway. |
