Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 5: Former Minister, Ex MLA Marh & Chairman Panchyati Raj Cell BJP, Sukhnandan Choudhary today made a press conference on the issue of ban on mining by Geology & Mining department in J&K. He urged the government to formulate a policy to address the issues pertaining to viability of developmental activities, which has been stopped due to non availability of raw material across the UT. He said that govt. must allow extraction and lifting of raw material including stones and sand on short term basis. “Since there is a blanket ban on stone quarrying and sand digging activities in both divisions of J&K, the government must issue short term permits to the concerned stakeholders, so that the developmental activities can be made functional. This way the livelihood of thousands of people who solely depends on this can be reinstated , “he remarked. He said that the ban on extraction and lifting of raw material has not only created acute shortage of key construction material in the market, but caused huge cost escalation, which affects overall developmental activities in both private and public sector across the Union Territory. He also quoted the example of 2014 flood in Kashmir division which drastically paralyzed the public life , reason behind non disilting of Jhelam river timely. “As the desilting of canal and Naalahs is necessary every year, minor extraction of Tawi river is also essential, otherwise the Kashmir like situation of 2014 flood can be witness here in coming days,” he added.
