Early Times Report

Srinagar, Nov 6: Amid mounting complaints of alleged misuse of the Covid-19 funding worth crores in Kashmir, New Delhi is looking ahead to call for a high level probe into the matter.
Sources said the government would start initial investigations in the coming days and “if the need arises” the case could be handed over to some central investigation agency.
While the Union Government led by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi open- heartedly provided funds to Jammu and Kashmir to combat the pandemic, there are numerous complaints of alleged corruption and misuse of the funds.
Sources said apart from heads of atleast three health institutions in Kashmir, some of the officials at the helm at district levels have also come under scanner.
Sources said the New Delhi has complaints that such officials made unnecessary bulk purchases at exorbitant prices putting the government to undue financial burden.
It was reliably learnt that New Delhi has given a go ahead to the Raj Bhawan to have zero tolerance towards corruption.
Sources said it was also being seen as to why the divisional administration had not maintained a coordination for such purchases.
“There is evidence that same items like masks and sanitizers were procured for same job by multiple agencies. Why was there no coordination remains the bigger question,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said there are also complaints that unnecessary expenditure worth millions done on the establishment of quarantine centers that were rarely used. “If other buildings were available to accommodate cases for quarantine what was the need to raise fresh structures,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Sources said at some of the hospitals in Srinagar in particular the utilities that had been dismantled in the last few years were reconstructed only to show expenditure. When contacted a senior official said the complaints had come to the notice of the government. He, however, remained tight lipped over when the probe was likely to be initiated.
