Healthcare sector in Jammu exposed!

Early Times Report

Jammu, Nov 13: The historic Jammu city has been bearing the brunt of the Covid-19 mortalities in the province exposing the poor healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Official records reveal that till the first week of November 2020 alone, at least 265 deaths took place in Jammu district, which is the highest for any district in the winter capital region.
With this being the deadly scene in the winter capital itself, the plight elsewhere in the province can only be imagined.
The winter capital is followed by Rajauri and Doda in highest number of deaths. On the day when the Early Times tallied the official records, the two districts had witnessed as many as 48 deaths each since the outbreak of the pandemic.
It is pertinent to mention that even though the Kashmir province has much better healthcare infrastructure in the Union Territory, the government gave more Covid-19 related funds to Kashmir.
While Jammu was sanctioned a special fund of Rs five crores only, Kashmir was given double the funds at Rs ten crores.
In Jammu, only the Government Medical College leads the Covid-19 related duties in the region, whereas in the summer capital of Srinagar two hospitals –the SK Institute of Medical Sciences Soura and the Government Medical College Srinagar are empowered for the job.
In Jammu district, the hospitals even suffered suffocation due to absence proper oxygen facilities as a result of which, many of the causalities were even related to the poor oxygen facilities.
It was only after the personal intervention of the Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha that the hospitals in Jammu woke to the oxygen crises.
Interestingly, in the initial months of the pandemic, when Kashmir was witnessing spread of the pandemic, Jammu was comparatively normal.
The people of Jammu had been receiving appreciation for their disciplined response towards the pandemic by following Standard Operation Procedures as prescribed the government.
“But the absence of proper healthcare infrastructure has proved deadly for Jammu, the City of Temples, as it has been bearing the brunt of the deadly coronavirus,” said a senior official on the condition of anonymity. A senior official confirmed the figures about the mortalities were correct but added that government was committed to provide quality healthcare services to the people of Jammu and Kashmir even as he refuted any discrimination with Jammu.
