Anger among PDP workers as NC captures Anantnag with Mehbooba’s support
2/12/2021 12:05:43 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 11: Even as former chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti is celebrating victory of Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) candidates as chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of Anantnag district, there is strong resentment among hardcore workers of PDP for surrendering before arch rival National Conference (NC).
Mohammad Yosuf Gorsi of NC was elected as chairperson of the District Development Council (DDC) Anantnag with the support of PDP which is satisfied with the post of vice chairperson. Although NC has won six DDC seats in Anantnag, PDP leaders were mounting pressure on Mehbooba Mufti to convince NC leadership to give chairperson seat to the party.
“Anantnag is a citadel of the PDP so allowing NC to capture the post of chairperson of DDC will prove disastrous for the party in the coming days”, a senior leader of PDP said on the condition of anonymity. He said that “clever” NC leadership had made it a point to capture Anantnag at any cost. “Our leadership fell into the trap of NC”, he said and added that being the arch-rival of PDP in the politics of Kashmir Valley, NC leadership was desperately trying to strengthen its base in Anantnag. Sources said that there was a feeling among hardcore PDP workers that NC leadership had sabotaged elections of many party candidates in the DDC elections by supporting independents. This afternoon Muhammad Yousuf Gorsi of NC was declared as chairperson of Anantnag district council while Advocate Javed Shaheen of PDP was elected unopposed for the post of vice chairperson respectively. For chairperson election, Gorsi of NC and Sajida Begum (Independent) had filed nominations. All 14 DDC members participated in the election where Gorsi got 11 votes and was elected as chairperson. Advocate Sheikh Javid Ahmad Shaheen of PDP won the Vice-Chairperson post unopposed.
