Left Alone
2/23/2021 11:57:26 PM
Two senior leaders of Peoples Democratic Party skipping the elections for party president’s post in Srinagar on Monday is an indication that Mehbooba Mufti’s party is heading towards yet another split. Mehbooba was reelected as the PDP president for three more years as no one opposed her candidature. She won unopposed. In fact there is no one left in her party who can challenge her authority as most of the leaders have deserted PDP. Mehbooba has been left alone. Recently one of her trusted lieutenant’s Peerzada Mansoor resigned from the party. Now, it seems that former Member Parliament Fayaz Ahmed and former minister in her cabinet Abdul Haq Khan, who skipped the all important meeting of the party in Srinagar, have decided to say goodbye to PDP. The PDP president needs to sit back and introspect why everyone has deserted her. The leaders who left the PDP on many occasions tried to drive home a point that no party in Kashmir can survive by annoying New Delhi, but Mehbooba just brushed aside their suggestions and carried on with her theatrics to threaten the Centre. The PDP leaders, who stayed with her after August 5, 2019, had to pay a heavy price for the mistakes that were committed by their president. Some ended up in jails, while a few have gone into oblivion.
After her release Mehbooba played a pivotal role in forming the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) an amalgam of Kashmir centric parties led by National Conference. She tried her best to pit the conglomerate against New Delhi. Initially NC president Dr Farooq Abdullah played into her hands but within a short time he realized that if he follows Mehbooba’s path that will be suicidal for his party. For a long time Abdullahs and Mehbooba have not met and the PAGD stands dismantled. The Peoples Conference led by Sajad Gani Lone has already deserted the amalgam.
If Mehbooba still continues to tread on the path she is following she may end up losing everyone. She seems to have forgotten the cardinal rule of politics that political parties in a democracy are run by the leaders. Neither can the president ignore the leaders nor their suggestions. But she messed up the basics of politics and has ended up as a loner.
