PCB conducts anti-polythene drive in Jammu, Amb-Gharota

JAMMU, Mar 26: Intensifying its anti-polythene drive against the sale, stocking and use of banned polythene carry bags having thickness below 50 microns and single use plastic cutlery items, a team of J&K Pollution Control Board (PCB), Jammu-North officers conducted raids at various shops, Fruit & Vegetable Mandies of Jammu and Gharota area.
The raiding team seized 800 kgs of banned polythene carry bags (below 50 microns) and single use plastic cutlery items. On receiving specific inputs that the banned polythene material was being distributed and circulated in the markets of Jammu on scooties, the team laid nakas at different spots and intercepted/seized 3 scooties which were found to be transporting banned polythene. The polythene mafia has adopted this new modus operandi of using scooties for polythene distribution to various shopkeepers and fruit /vegetable vendors of the city and its outskirts.
On specific information about a few shopkeepers in Amb-Gharota Area who were openly trading the banned polythene/plastic material. The shops were raided with support and assistance of the Police team from Amb-Gharota Police Station headed by SHO Khayatiman Khajuria. During raids about 800 kgs of banned polythene carry bags and non-biodegradable disposables (SUP) was seized, the violators were compounded for Rs 32500/-. The team was headed by Divisional Officer, J&K Pollution Control Board Jammu-North.
The drive was conducted on the directions of Chairman JKPCB, Suresh Chugh and under the direct supervision of Member Secretary J&K PCB, BM Sharma and Regional Director Jammu, Dr Syed Nadeem Hussain.
