Justice NV Ramana takes oath as 48th Chief Justice of India

NEW DELHI: Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana took oath as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Saturday. He was administered the oath of office and secrecy at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The senior-most Supreme Court judge was sworn in by President Ram Nath Kovind as the 48th Chief Justice of India at a simple ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad were among those present at the ceremony.Justice NV Ramana took the oath in English in the name of God. Justice NV Ramana succeeded Justice SA Bobde, who retired as the Chief Justice on Friday.

Born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district on August 27, 1957, Justice Ramana, 63, will be the country's top judge for a year and four months till August 26, 2022.

He is the second Chief Justice of India from Andhra Pradesh; Justice K Subba Rao was the ninth Chief Justice of India from 1966-67.
