Hoardings’ scandal inflicts losses to Lakhanpur MC
‘No revenue earned in last five years’

EARLY TIMES REPORT

KATHUA, May 5: Lakhanpur Municipal Committee (MC) has once again cancelled the tendering process for the hoardings at different locations at the entrance of J&K.
It is relevant to mention here that the tendering process for the purpose has not been initiated for years together.
If sources are to be believed, a Jammu based businessman was manning hoardings for years in violation of rules which causes huge loss to the MC’s exchequer. “This time a Jammu based businessman gave highest bid of Rs 10 lakhs, and on same average for last five years the total revenue of at least Rs 50 lakhs from hoardings was expected to be generated by the MC Lakhanpur, but the process was cancelled”, they said, adding that the tender process would be initiated again after sometime.
“Now the question arises, if the highest bid for this year was Rs 10 lakhs, why the MC Lakhanpur kept allotting the tenders for the same through backdoors. The officers and officials of MC Lakhanpur earned huge amount through backdoor due to which MC has suffered huge revenue loss”, they said, adding that this year’s bid clearly shows that hoardings could be better source of revenue for the MC, but those sitting at helm of affairs have caused huge loss to the public body.
“ACB should conduct a probe into the allotment procedure adopted by the MC of the last many years. Who were the beneficiary and on what criteria allotment of hoardings done by the MC. It was a scandal and if an enquiry is conducted many big fishes, on whose recommendation works were allotted would be exposed”, they added.
“At present there are many hoardings that can be seen on various prime locations at Lakhanpur. The MC has not received even a single penny for these hoardings. It is crystal clear that someone has grabbed past revenues. The MC authorities kept silent over open loot of its resources”, sources said, adding that presently Chairman and Vice Chairman’s posts are occupied by BJP members and their involvement in this scandal cannot be ruled out.
