Colleges directed to complete syllabus within 2 months
Students, teachers aghast; say it’s impossible

Early Times Report

Jammu, June 6: Students of Government Degree Colleges (GDCs), except those affiliated with the Cluster University, are facing the brunt of Covid-19 pandemic as the syllabus meant to be completed in six months is being completed in just two months that too in the online mode.
A group of students told Early times, “The haste with which the syllabus is being completed in colleges will ultimately impact our studies. W e are finding hard to cope up.”
The communiqué forwarded by the Nodal Principal to the Principals of Government Degree Colleges reads, “As directed by the Secretary to Government, Higher Education Department, all the Principals of Colleges other than Cluster Colleges are requested to gear up to complete the syllabus of even Semester II/IV/VI currently on rolls by 20th of July 2021”.
Taking strong exception to the order, the faculty members said that there was over 45 percent shortage of permanent faculty members in Government Degree Colleges, which was compensated by the contractual faculty members. “Since the end of May month, the tenure of contractual faculty has expired (except some candidates of status-quo), leaving the students at the mercy of vacant faculty posts’”, the faculty members said.
They further said most of the peripheral colleges were short of faculty members and the department has been unable to make some new arrangement but on the other hand it has passed instructions to complete syllabus by July 20, which is totally unjustifiable.
Another member said that apart from engagement of contractual faculty there was another issue. “Exams of odd semesters including Semester I, III, V concluded in the last week of May in most of the peripheral colleges. The online class work just began in the first week of June while the permanent faculty members are to conduct private exams of old semester as well as new semester along with their engagements in admission process, taking assignments etc. How can the syllabus of 90 lecturers be completed in just 45 days?”, the faculty member said, adding that the concept which could be understood by students in offline mode in half an hour, takes one hour in online mode.
“With shortage of faculty as well as time-frame, the permanent faculty will ultimately complete the syllabus in haste and in the syllabus would be shown as complete in papers but ultimately the students will suffer as their understanding of concepts will be totally weak”, the teaching faculty said, adding that department should restore the services of contractual faculty without any further delay along with giving much time to complete the syllabus.
President of College Teachers Association Dr. Rakesh Jasrotia said that the peripheral colleges would find it hard to complete the syllabus by July 20th as the classes started only in the first week of May. “We have already taken up the matter with the Higher Education Department to issue an order continuing the services of contractual faculty members so that there would be no problems in the peripheral colleges,” Dr Jasrotia said.
Nodal Principal GGM Science College Ravinder Tickoo said that in the interest of the students, the department has desired to complete the syllabus by July 20. “We have already taken up the matter with the Higher Education Department to give extension to the contractual faculty and we are expecting an order shortly. In the meantime, we have already asked the Principals of the Colleges to utilize the services of the contractual faculty members to complete the syllabus”, Tickoo said.
