Delimitation Commission holding a virtual meeting with Deputy Commissioners across Jammu and Kashmir is an indication that the process to redraw the assembly and parliamentary constituencies is likely to get completed within a few months.
It seems that the Centre is mulling to hold the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in early 2022 and the groundwork for the process has commenced.
Prime Minister, Narendra Modi meeting 14 leaders from Jammu and Kashmir in New Delhi first time after the abrogation of Article 370 is a clear hint that the Centre wants to fulfill its commitment of restoring statehood to J&K.
Old political players are being roped into become a part of the process to rebuild J&K. After the completion of the delimitation exercise, the discrimination meted out with the Jammu region will end once for all as the assembly seats will be distributed equally between Jammu and Kashmir regions.
PM Modi by inviting Kashmir based leaders showed his magnanimity and provided a golden opportunity to Kashmir based leaders to join the mainstream again.
After meeting the Prime Minister these leaders said that they put forth their views before him and demanded restoration of statehood, holding of assembly elections, settlement of Kashmiri Pandits, release of political detainees and deliberations on domicile rule.
This indicates a clear shift in their stand as there was no discussion on rolling back Article 370 or holding talks with Pakistan.
The Kashmir based leaders seem to have fallen in the line.
By maintaining silence over contentious issues these leaders have indicated that they are in mood to take confrontation with the Centre and want to become a part of the mainstream.
During the past two years many things have changed in J&K and so has the political scenario.
Young leaders are ready to don the mantle of the traditional politicians. It seems Kashmiri leaders too have realized that the PM inviting them for talks was the last opportunity they had and it seems they have grabbed it.
In the coming days there is every possibility about J&K witnessing hectic political activities as the politicians have got a green signal from New Delhi to regroup and start the political process afresh.
Kashmir based politicians need to bear in mind that they shouldn’t repeat the mistakes that they committed in the past. Times have changed and they cannot hoodwink the people anymore.
