BARAMULLA, Aug 24: Three militants of LeT outfit were killed in an overnight gunfight that raged yesterday evening in PethSeer village of Sopore town in this north Kashmir district on Tuesday.
A top police official said that yesterday evening a joint team of Police, Army 52 RR and CRPF 177,179 and 92 cordoned off the village following inputs about the presence of militants in the Peethseer area of Sopore town.
“During the searches forces zeroed in on the suspected spot, where the militants fired at the security forces that retaliated, triggering an encounter, however due to the following night, operation was put on hold, even high volt lights were installed in the area, the official told early times.
However it was learnt from sources that there was a movement of some militants affiliated with the Resistance Front (TRF) of LeT outfit in Peethseer, after which CASO was launched to neutralize them as early as possible.
Meanwhile Today afternoon police spokesperson in a statement said that, during the intervening night of 23/24 August 2021, based on specific input generated by Police regarding presence of terrorists in Pethseer area of Sopore, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Sopore Police, Army (52RR) and CRPF in the said area.
During the search operation as the presence of terrorists got ascertained, they were given opportunity to surrender, however, instead they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which retaliated leading to an encounter.
However due to darkness the operation was suspended, while the cordon was kept intact. In the wee hours, repeated announcements were again made to the hiding terrorists to surrender, but the terrorists again fired on the joint search party and the fire was retaliated.
In the ensuing encounter, three terrorists were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of the encounter. They have been identified as Faisal Fayaz son of Fayaz Ah Thokar resident of Kapren Shopian, Gh Mustafa Sheikh son of Abdul Ahad Sheikh resident of Tekipura Kupwara and Rameez Ah Ghanie son of Ab Majeed Ghanie resident of Zipor Dharamati, Shopian, affiliated with proscribed terror outfit LeT (TRF).
As per police records, the killed terrorists were part of groups involved in several terror crime cases including attacks on security establishments and civilian atrocities.
