Abandoning heritage sites
9/6/2021 11:44:29 PM
Jammu and Kashmir administration abandoning Nandini village on the old Jammu-Srinagar Highway is yet another instance of official apathy.
Nandini, famous for paneer (cheese) pakora and tea, was renowned across the country and most of the highway travelers used to stop there to enjoy the delicacies. After the new highway was made operational Nandini got cut off. Instead of developing it into a tourist spot the authorities just left it.
As on date the old highway which used to connect Nandini with Jammu has worn off and the road is not in a motorable condition. Population of monkeys has increased manifold and they are in conflict with humans. Tall claims of J&K administration to develop the Jammu region as a tourist destination are confined to papers only as the sites of historical importance have been left in ruins.
Despite abrogation of Article 370, a common man in Jammu continues to suffer and has been left to fend on his own. The promises that were made to a commoner in Jammu have not been fulfilled. It’s not Nandini only that has been deserted by the authorities, the oldest tirath sthan, Purmandal, too has been craving for attention. The artificial lake project on Tawi River has not been completed even 10-years after its inception.
People of Jammu are asking a simple question i.e. are they non-existent? And is Jammu and Kashmir only about Kashmir? Nearly 300 parliamentarians have visited J&K in the recent past but not even three have visited Jammu. Is it that no one cares for Jammu or is it that people of this region have been taken for granted?
It’s high time for the authorities to pay some attention towards the development of the Jammu region. The pristine glory of the heritage places needs to be restored. Places of Jammu that have been abandoned need to be brought on the tourism map. Jammu people deserve a better deal and they cannot be ignored. Bureaucrats who are running the system should bear in mind that people of Jammu have always stood by the nationalist cause and have held tricolor very close to their heart. They have never supported terrorism and violence and have always opposed the anti-national elements.
Ones who are only talking about Kashmir need to realize that people of Jammu have given immense sacrifices for the national cause and they can’t be left in lurch.
