| Govt College of Education celebrates World Literacy Day | | |

JAMMU, Sep 8: World Literacy Day was celebrated in Government College of Education today to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
To inspire and encourage the students to get literate, NSS volunteers of GCOE organized a ‘Drop of Any Book of Use’ programme. The main aim of this activity is to highlight the importance of literacy for students. In lieu of this volunteers visited the slum areas and spoke to the children at length about the need for education and its benefits apart from distributing books and other stationery items.
The programme was conducted by NSS Nodal Officer Dr Shubhra Jamwal along with Prof Shapia Shameem Bhatti, Prof Sarita Dogra, and Prof Seema Kumari. Dr Kulvinder Kour, Principal of GCOE applauded the efforts of NSS volunteers. While stressing the importance of literacy she said “Literacy does not mean reading and writing skills only. Today, it has gained a broader meaning as it channelizes people towards awareness to achieve a better way of living.” More than 35 students from various programs participated to mark the celebration and undertook a donation drive by distributing the books, notebooks, and essential stationery items to the children of slum areas. All the children were very excited and happy to get the books and other items. |
