After Geelani’s death, Mirwaiz surfaces to grab separatist space
9/10/2021 11:13:30 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 10: Even as senior separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani has passed away, his arch-rival from Hurriyat M Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has started getting active.
Sources said the Mirwaiz looks ahead to gain public support after the Geelani’s death “so as to grab number one position in the separatist politics.”
While Mirwaiz had often spoken in public against Geelani and his ideology, now all of a sudden he is shedding crocodile tears.
The Mirwaiz has also issued a statement to condole the demise of Geelani and to say that he couldn’t make it to the funeral due to the restrictions.
“He(Mirwaiz) was always scared of Geelani and his influence and thus would stay back at most of the times but now as a field is open for him, he wants to grab that space,” said a political observer.
It’s pertinent to mention that the Hurriyat G and Hurriyat M have remained arch rivals in the separatist politics.
Political observers said while Geelani had resigned from the Hurriyat G last year and his successor Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has also passed away, the Hurriyat G has been left headless.
“Given the headless situation of the Hurriyat G, he (Mirwaiz) will try to grab the entire separatist space in Kashmir,” the observer added.
Its pertinent to mention that Geelani passed away on September 2 at his residence in Srinagar after a prolonged ailment. He was 92. He was buried at a graveyard near his residence.
In a bid to avoid any law and order situation, the Jammu and Kashmir Police had to impose strict restrictions in the valley.
While initially mobile phones and internet connectivity were snapped, landline internet and mobile phone connectivity were restored on September 2.
Police said no untoward incident was reported from anywhere across Kashmir.
